American idol - A dozen goodlooking girls
(orginially review 2-20) New York: My sources deep inside the vaults of Fox have been telling me all week that the flu is going around the girls. "By sources", I mean my wife. And by "deep inside the vaults", I mean Access Hollywood.
Last night the guys had a rather mixed night. But, let's face it. The 60s were all about bands, groups and great songs . Not a lot of male vocalists.
On the other hand, here's a partial list of legendary 60's divas:
Diana, Aretha, Dionne, Dusty, Ronnie, Petula, Gladys, Lulu, Barbra, Mary Wells, Martha Reeves, Lesley Gore…you get the picture.
So we should be in for an amazing night. Right?
For someone like me the only thing worse than a horrible singer or performance is a very mediocre one.
And with that herrrrree's, Kristy Lee Cook. The Horse girl from the Oregon Trail takes out Fontella Bass's brilliant, "Rescue Me" to the rodeo and ties herself up in knots. Kristy is a good looking girl but that doesn't make up for the lackluster performance and I have a feeling she's gone after tonight.
Now you and I know that no matter how hard we try we are gonna compare Joanne Borgella to past alumni Mandisa and LaKisha. And based on tonight's rendition of "Say a little Prayer" she falls flat.
Redux Alert!
Tonight, Alaina Whitaker takes on the same song as Chikezie Like Sunday Mornin'. And prophetically, I like this song "More today than yesterday". But doesn't Alaina remind you of the girl from the movie Can't Buy Me Love? Somebody call Patrick Dempsey.

Perhaps the greatest of the unknown bands of the 60s was Them with a then equally unknown Van Morrison singing lead. "GLORIA", "Here comes the night", and "Baby please don't go" are all classics. Amanda Overmyer, the resident rocker comes up big tonight. I believe this performance. It was a winner. She reminded of Elvis's during his '68 Comeback Special, sans the leather outfit.
We never got a chance to meet Amy Davis during the audition/HollywoodWeek process. So she's here tonight singing "Where the Boys are". It's not interesting. What IS interesting is the sight of Amy's parents. They are wearing T-shirts with a big picture of Amy. They must be so proud of her.
My parents also told people they were proud of their kids too. Of course, my folks' shirts had a picture of someone else's kid on it.
Redux Alert!
David #8 and Brooke White both cover "Happy Together". Brooke's version is better but it's still blah. Brooke is a total throwback to the seventies. I'm pretty sure she was a member of Starlight Vocal Band for "Afternoon Delight". Give that girl a sparkler and a curling iron.
Alexandrea Lushington's "Spinning Wheel" is kind of funky. She has a great lower registry but her falsetto is a no-no.
Kady Malloy is a babe. Her "Groovy Kind of Love" is a dud. She could be tossed out.
One of music's biggest female stars had her first hit with "Piece of My Heart". Of course I'm talking about Faith Hill. Asia'h Epperson does a nice job with the song. Speaking of unknown's of the 1960s: This song was written by the genius Bert Berns. Berns also composed another Janis Joplin classic, "Cry Baby" as well as "Twist and Shout", "Tell Him (that you're never gonna leave him)", "25 Miles", "Everybody Needs Someone to Love", and "Hang on Sloopy"
Ramiele Malubay tries out Dusty's "You don't have to say you love me" and surprisingly the song isn't too big for her (no pun intended).
First off, Syesha Mercado is hot. Sue me.
She takes on a song that was done last year by 'Lurch' (aka scary bald Phil), "Tobacco Road". But Syesha ain't scary. I wouldn't mind if she hid in my closet with a knife.
Hmmm…it must be getting very late as I type this.
Finally…
Like last night, the producers of American Idol leave the last spot to the Aussie. Carly Smithson sings the grammy and academy award winning tune, "The Shadow of your smile". Carly makes some people in the audience cry. I assume they were touched. I was just glad this night was over.
By the way, did you notice how the 12 Boyz barely tried to clap, snap or dance along to help any of the girls along. Were they bored or are they just jerks?
Prediction: Bye bye Kady and Kristy.
